Device Features
CameraWatch
CameraWatch is the first Speed Camera model that was produced and was published
in Everyday Practical Electronics in January 2005. It has a simple LED bargraph
for displaying the proximity to the nearest speed camera and produces an audible
alert when in close proximity. Two push buttons allow the user to record or deleted
camera locations.
How does it work? CameraWatch is powered by a small embedded GPS module produced by Holux.
The module calculates the current position and signals this once per second to a small microcontroller on
the main PCB. Every time an update is received, the microcontroller scans the entire database
to re-evaluate which stored location is closest, and translates this to the LED bar graph.
There is no interface on the unit, although it is possible to preload some locations during
assembly. It can handle at most 1000 locations.
CameraWatch2
CameraWatch2 has been produced as a result of feedback from users of the original product.
The database has been increased to a capacity of over 10,000 locations, an LCD display has been
added for more detailed feedback and a PC interface has been added. The PC interface means that it is
now possible to share information between users - hence the existance of this website!
The addition of an LCD display means that more information can be provided. CameraWatch2 has a number
of different displays, and can provide the following features:
- Position, in latitude & longitude
- Altitude, in Metres and heading in degrees
- Warning when exceeding fixed speeds ( 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 MPH )
- More detail on proximity to a camera
